Prince George to be kept out of limelight after 'harsh' criticism, royal author claims

Prince George will be kept "out of the limelight" after an onslaught of "harsh" social media criticism, a royal expert has claimed.

Robert Jobson, who co-authored Diana: Closely Guarded Secret, said the prince was mocked for wearing a suit and tie during the Euro 2020 final on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

George, 7, sat with parents Prince William and Kate Middleton for the dramatic match and was seen cheering enthusiastically when Luke Shaw scored the first goal for England.

Some trolls online criticised the youngster for what he wore, and Mr Jobson now thinks he will be kept from the public eye because of it, Daily Star reports.

The royal expert spoke to the Sunrise TV show in Australia and said: "With George, he got quite a lot of social media attention.

"Some were critical about him wearing a shirt and tie like his dad, which I thought was very harsh.

"He has been very popular, but I think they are going to try and keep him out of the limelight a little bit.

"They are very conscious of that. The pictures were great with his dad when he was celebrating for that all too brief moment."

Some horrible comments made online about George included: "Hope the little twerp cries into his tie."

Another wrote: "And this royal turnout is supposed to make Scotland want to stay in the union? Absolutely not."

A third chimed in: "Why the sour faces, it's just a game."

Another user added: "Someone needs to bully this kid. Just so he can grow up normal."

It comes after reports claimed Prince George begged his father to go to Wembley and to dress like him.

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe says a pal of the Duke of Cambridge said why they wore similar suits.

They told OK! : "George idolises his dad. That’s why we saw him looking so smart in his suit - he really wanted to dress like William."

However, Wimbledon Star Marion Bartoli said William was in favour of George donning a replica shirt, but Kate was against it.

She told BBC Radio 5 Live ahead of the final: "Yesterday I had an afternoon tea with the duchess, and it was very much a discussion whether George will be allowed to wear the jersey tonight at Wembley or not.

"William was for it, Kate not so keen, so we'll see."

Prince George has seen looking glum after Gareth Southgate's Three Lions failed to win the penalty shootout on Sunday.

The young royal was one of 60,000 fans packed into the stadium.

Following England's heartbreaking loss, Prince William tweeted: "Heartbreaking. Congratulations @Azzurri on a great victory.

"@England, you’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there’s more to come."
