Prince George and Princess Charlotte's new names confirmed as Queen is laid to rest

Prince George and Princess Charlotte's new surname has been confirmed today.

There had been much speculation over whether the Cambridge children would need a change of name following the death of their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. Since the 96-year-old monarch's death, the young royal's dad, William, and his wife Kate, have had a change of title.

Previously known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Kate and William are now known as the Prince and Princess of Wales. Royals don't tend to have an official surname, but their children were known as George and Charlotte Cambridge for education and work purposes.

But today, their new surname was confirmed as Wales. Their younger sibling, Louis, will also take on the new surname.

The change was noted on the Queen's funeral's order of service, as Her Majesty was laid to rest in front of millions this morning, on September 19. Royal expert Angela Mollard said: "This must have been an enormous few days for Catherine.

"She's taken on a new role herself, but she's also got to teach her very young children, aged nine, seven and four, that their surnames have changed. They are no longer George, Charlotte and Louis Cambridge, they are now George, Charlotte and Louis Wales. Any parent will recognise that when you've taught a young child how to spell their name, that's the name they're known as among their classmates."
