The Prince of Wales will visit startup academy Wayra UK as part of an initiative encouraging young people to get involved in campaigning, fundraising and volunteering.
The prince will deliver a keynote speech on 24 November at the academy, which is supporting his #iwill campaign. The campaign, launched in 2013, aims to make 1.5 million young people more socially active by 2020.
Gary Stewart, director of Wayra UK, Telefónica’s startup accelerator, says: “The ability to make social impact is a great motivator for many of our entrepreneurs. Many of the digital solutions our startups have developed have significantly improved the lives of their users.”
Since the campaign launched, more than 330 organisations have pledged to support #iwill.
Charlotte Hill, chief executive of Step Up to Serve, the charity behind #iwill, says: “At present, 40% of 10- to 20-year-olds in the UK are involved in social action and we know that many more have an appetite to take part. Alongside this it’s been shown that participation in social [action] enhances employability skills.”
The day will include workshops and a panel discussion, and will be hosted by TV presenter Susanna Reid and #iwill ambassador Rhammel Afflick.
Joining the prince on the day will be senior leaders from the business, education and voluntary sectors.
