Prince Charles takes over second role from brother Prince Andrew

The Prince of Wales has become president of Malaria No More UK – the charity for which his brother, the Duke of York, was previously patron.

It is the second organisation that Charles has followed Andrew in taking on an official role, after becoming patron of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) last month – a duty that once fell to the duke.

Malaria No More UK announced on Monday that the heir to the throne’s presidency will take effect immediately.

Andrew stepped down from public duties 18 months ago following the controversy around his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and the fallout from his disastrous Newsnight interview.

He had been appointed patron of Malaria No More UK in 2018.

Charles has long been a supporter of the charity, which works to end the disease by encouraging the public, businesses and government to fight for a malaria-free world.

He addressed a dedicated Malaria Summit three years ago, when he described combating the disease as “without doubt an issue of truly global urgency”.

James Whiting, chief executive of Malaria No More UK, said: “We are empowered by the support of His Royal Highness and look forward to working with him to ensure our global community meets the vital internationally agreed targets towards ending malaria and saving millions of children’s lives in the decades ahead.”

He added: “We must not let Covid-19 or climate change put us into retreat.

“Let 2021 be the year when we get back on track to end this preventable disease.”

Malaria kills more than 400,000 people a year.

Almost two-thirds of deaths are children under five, with a child dying from the treatable, preventable disease every two minutes.

Africa carries the greatest malaria burden in the world, with 94% of all cases and deaths.

The summit led to a commitment from Commonwealth leaders to halve malaria cases and deaths by 2023.

Andrew was relieved of his patronage of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra by its board in November 2019.
