Prince Charles's pet name for "beloved" Camilla is revealed by friend

Prince Charles has a very special nickname for his wife Camilla, according to a pal of the royal.

The heir to the throne apparently calls his wife 'mehbooba', which means 'my beloved' in Urdu - the national language of Pakistan.

Charles' friends revealed the sweet pet name when reflecting on the Prince of Wales' devotion to his wife.

It comes after the Queen made it clear she wanted Camilla to become Queen Consort when her son ascends the throne.

Before the monarch's intervention, Camilla would have been known as Princess Consort when Charles became King.

Speaking to the Daily Mail's royal correspondent, one of Prince Charles' pals said: "He loves his wife, he adores her.

"He calls her his 'mehbooba' – 'my beloved' [in Urdu]. How could he be a true husband and endorse a situation when she was asked to be a second-class citizen?"

Camilla was apparently not involved in the decision to upgrade her future title from Princess Consort to Queen Consort.

Instead, the Queen, her private secretary Sir Edward Young and Charles' aide Clive Alderton were involved in the change.

Prince Charles apparently spoke to his sons Harry and William about the new title, the Mail reports.

Announcing the change, the monarch said: "I am fortunate to have had the steadfast and loving support of my family.

"I was blessed that in Prince Philip I had a partner willing to carry out the role of consort and unselfishly make the sacrifices that go with it. It is a role I saw my own mother perform during my father’s reign.

"And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service."

Responding to her statement in his message paying tribute to his mother on her Jubilee, Charles said: “We are deeply conscious of the honour represented by my mother’s wish.

“As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout."

A royal consort is the spouse of a serving monarch, whose main duty is to provide support and companionship during their reign.

As the Prince of Wales’ spouse, Camilla was already automatically set to be his consort and also technically Queen when he becomes King.

However due to the complications involved in Charles and Camilla's relationship, it was not known whether she would take on the role.

She passed up the title of Princess of Wales out of respect for Diana.

But the Queen has now paved the way for Camilla to be called Queen Camilla, after royal aides said at the time of her wedding in 2005 that she would be known instead as Princess Consort.
