Prince Charles is king of the boxing ring on visit to Cuba

Prince Charles steps into the ring as his historic visit to Cuba proves a knockout hit.

The prince was at the Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym in capital Havana as the first official royal visit to the communist nation drew huge crowds.

The 70-year-old and wife Camilla, 71, also popped into the dance school of Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta.

There were some chaotic scenes as police cleared the way during a tour of Old Havana – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with colonial buildings dating to the 16th century.

The Duchess was using a parasol to stay cool in the 30C heat but Charles had a better idea.

He ducked into a barber’s and when owner Josephine Nando tried to persuade him to have a trim he said: “No, no, I’ve just come in for the air conditioning.”

They arrived on Sunday for the four-day visit, made at our Government’s request to boost trade with Cuba.

But our royals are not well known there and one British diplomat said: “Their view of the Royal Family has been mainly formed by watching [ Netflix series] The Crown.”

Some Tory backbenchers and US Republicans have ­criticised the trip, as Cuba is helping to prop up Nicolas Maduro’s brutal regime in Venezuela.

Earlier, the Mirror reported how Charles and Camilla's official trip to Cuba would be a first by members of the monarchy and comes after the couple's tour of five Commonwealth Caribbean countries where the Queen is head of state.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were welcomed by officials after touching down at Jose Marti International Airport in Havana in an RAF Voyager plane from Barbados.

They have already attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Jose Marti monument and were pictured standing in front of an image of Ernesto "Che" Guevara, a well known figure of the Cuban Revolution.
