Prince Charles has hinted that the name of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's first child could be Kylie or Shane.

The Prince of Wales joked that the names Kylie and Shane were on the table for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child who is due in the spring.

Speaking at a reception celebrating the centenary of Australia House, in London, Charles said: “Incidentally ladies and gentlemen my son Harry tells me that during their recent tour of Australia, he and his wife were offered countless thoughtful suggestions for the naming of their forthcoming baby.

"Just between us, I suspect that Kylie and Shane may possibly make the shortlist," he said.

"But ladies and gentlemen I would not hold your breath for Edna or Les."

Harry and Meghan are expecting their first child in the spring with anticipation building over the gender of the child and the name that will be chosen.

Charles, who recently turned 70, was accompanied to the event with his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla, and praised Australia during his speech.

He said he had “a deep and abiding" affection for Australia and spoke of his "pride in seeing it go from strength to strength" both at home and on the world stage.

The Prince of Wales praised Australia for its self-deprecating sense of humour and as a nation which he said stands by friends and strangers in times of trouble.
