Prince Charles sparks fury over appointing American Katy Perry as an ambassador for a British charity for Asia

Prince Charles is embroiled in a row - over Katy Perry.

Charles unveiled the American pop sensation, 34, as an envoy of the British Asian Trust, of which he is royal patron, at an event in London .

The prince said Katy has a “long-standing commitment to charitable causes around the world”.

But the move sparked anger from some who questioned the Californian’s credentials for the role.

Saigon Love Story film-maker Ringo Le said: "This is what happens when white people listen to Joaquin Phoenix’s BAFTA speech about dismantling systematic racism."

"They double down and pick Katy Perry to be the face of their Asian Trust."

This Morning star Dr Ranj Singh initially queried the 'unusual' move.

He insisted: "She is a massive pop star with great influence. Her music is fab.

"But she’s not British, nor Asian... it just seems like an unusual choice."

Perry, 35, who married former husband Russell Brand in India, said that it has a very special meaning to her when she admitted that the country "has long held a special place" in her heart.

She continued: "On my last visit, I was able to meet with the Prince of Wales and the other leaders in Mumbai."
