Prince Charles and Camilla to attend Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla last visited Australia in 2015, including Albany and Perth.

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker Bowles are heading to the sunshine state for a royal tour during the Commonwealth Games next April.

The heir to the British throne and the Duchess of Cornwall will combine their official roles at the event with a luxury holiday in Queensland.

Minister for Tourism Kate Jones said to have a royal visit during the Games was the "jewel in the crown".

The Royal couple were formally invited to the Games by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in March.

It will be Prince Charles' first visit to Queensland since 2012, which saw a series of outback engagements including a visit to Longreach.

The pair also came to Australia in 2015, but skipped Queensland.

'Celebrity appeal' could rake in millions

Tourism experts say the "celebrity appeal" of the Royals will bring in tens of millions of dollars in tourism terms.

Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Daniel Gschwind said the UK market was the third most important tourism market to Queensland bringing in half a billion dollars in benefit to the state.

However, Minister Jones said in terms of international exposure the tour was "priceless".

"We know already the Commonwealth Games will attract hundreds of millions of dollars of free advertising around the world," she said.

"And of course we have so much to show Prince Charles and Camilla from the Gold Coast to the Great Barrier Reef."

Mr Gschwind is encouraging the Royals to bring the rest of the family along, as well including The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and his wife Kate and their two children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Minister Jones said she was "holding out hope we will get Will and Kate as well".

"But it is wonderful news," she said.

"The discussions with the palace and the Royal family will continue."

Ms Jones said it is unclear which events the couple would attend or how long they would be in the state.
