Prince Andrew took ironing board on trade mission visit, says ex-diplomat

Prince Andrew stunned diplomats by taking an ironing board on a trade mission.

Former diplomat Simon Wilson told how Andrew bungled in Bahrain in 2002 when he was Special Representative for International Trade and Investment.

Mr Wilson said: “Prince Andrew always brought a large entourage with him. A private secretary, an equerry, a valet, a lady clerk and a business adviser. We were shocked when a 6ft ironing board was trying to be negotiated into one of the embassy cars.

“I asked the valet and said, ‘this is insane’. And the valet’s reply was, ‘no one knows how to iron his Royal Highness’ trousers like me.”

Mr Wilson told ITV documentary The Real Crown: Inside the House of Windsor that the Duke of York refused to get up and give prepared speeches.

He added: “The same thing had happened to every mission.”
