Prince Andrew in 60th birthday snub as Liverpool follows through with promise

Prince Andrew received a birthday snub today as Liverpool Council confirmed no Union flag is flying from Liverpool Town Hall to mark his 60th birthday.

Mayor Joe Anderson had previously vowed the flag wouldn't be flown on council buildings to celebrate the Duke of York, calling it "inappropriate" to mark the milestone.

Councils received an email earlier this month from the government ordering them to fly the flag despite the Queen cancelling the formal celebration for her son's birthday following his disastrous Newsnight appearance.

But Downing Street backtracked after Liverpool and other councils rejected the idea, with officials saying it would be up to councils to decide whether to fly the flag or not.

A council spokesman confirmed today no flag is flying in Liverpool.

Asked earlier this month by the Liverpool Echo whether the council would fly the flag, mayor Anderson said:"No, we won't be doing that.

"I don't think that would be appropriate.

"But Prince Andrew isn't a major royal, he's not a significant member of the Royal Family."

He added: "This isn't to do with being anti-royal, we have flown the flag for the Queen before."

Mayor Anderson also made reference to the fact Prince Andrew is facing scrutiny over his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein - the billionaire financier.

The Duke's activities were the subject of a car-crash interview on Newsnight that resulted in him stepping back from public duties - but questions about his conduct continue to be asked.

Mayor Anderson added: "When you look at his behaviour - it wouldn't be appropriate for us to mark his birthday."
