Ha-Joon Chang’s succinct and coruscating analysis of Conservative economic policies (Comment, 20 October) and the falsehoods they have promulgated to damn Labour’s economic reputation should be copied and sent to every Labour MP. Someone should be asking why these figures were never effectively used in the last four years by the Labour party leadership whenever and wherever the subject arose. It is still not too late to persuade the electorate.

• Twice in recent months I have walked out of a London theatre because of the continous and unnecessary foul-mouthed language in two plays (The Commitments and Great Britain). Needless to say, I was not refunded my ticket price. Is it not time all prospective audiences were warned about such language?

• Re Michel Platini’s call for a 10-minute sin-bin for dissent in football (Report, 17 October): I have long thought that an appropriate sanction would be for the offenders to don a Mr Blobby suit and run three times round the pitch, prostrating themselves in front of the fourth official after each circuit. The quicker they ran, the quicker they would be allowed to return.

• There have been a number of letters from widows relating to their late husbands’ interests, hobbies etc (14 October, for example). At the same time the plight of lonely elderly men has been highlighted (Letters, 18 October). Why don’t the two groups meet up and solve the problem?
