Primeira Liga promotion confirmed for C.D. Nacional and Farense after second-tier season ended in Portugal

C.D. Nacional and Farense will officially return to Portugal's Primeira Liga next term after the 2019-20 season was declared over for teams in the country's second division.

Last week, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa confirmed that top-flight football would be permitted to return behind closed doors and with "tight restrictions" at the end of May, while the Portuguese Cup Final between Benfica and Porto is also set to take place.

However, permission for resumption did not extend to the leagues below, with the second-tier season halted with 11 rounds of matches left to play.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the league said it was "forced to decide on the definitive suspension of the LigaPro", with leaders C.D. Nacional and second-placed Farense both promoted.

The league said the standings at the time of the suspension on March 12 would be final.

The decision was taken in line with recommendations from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and European football's governing body Uefa, it said.

Nacional return after a one-year absence, while Farense last played in the top-flight in 2001-02.

At one point, Farense dropped down to the amateur league after a series of financial crises.
