Prime Time viewers all agree on one thing after 'heartbreaking' special report ahead of eviction ban lift

RTE Prime Time viewers were all in agreement on one thing after the show aired tonight amid conversation around the lifting of the existing eviction ban.

The ban has been in place since October 30, 2022 but these rules protecting certain tenants will expire on March 31, 2023.

While in place, it meant that if you are renting private rented accommodation you could not be evicted during these months, even if you have been issued with a valid notice of termination.

Now as the end of the eviction ban approaches, many people across Ireland are in fear of where they will end up and have bene given Friday, March 31 as the day they must be out of their current homes.

There has been much debate around the topic, and tonight Minister Sean Fleming and Sinn Féin's Eoin O’Broin spoke with Fran McNulty on the topic.

After hearing the stories of two women with families, Caroline and Laura, viewers were left less than impressed by what one politician on tonight’s show had to say.

Mr. Flemming first explained: “I’m deeply taken by the story of Laura and Caroline and with their cases, we have them in every single local authority, and what’s coming with that programme so far is that they need to get more hands-on help through their local authority”.

When pressed by McNulty on the fact that these women are in this position because of a decision made by the government to lift the ban, Fleming continued: “No, let’s be very clear, every party in Dail Eireann, including Sinn Fein, agrees the ban should be lifted at some stage”.

He went on to say: “What I’m saying to Laura and Caroline is that they must talk to their local authority.

“The message I’m taking from this video I have seen now is the minister needs to directly contact the two Chief Executives that are being highlighted here - South Dublin County Council and Carlow County Council - because over 1,000 houses have been bought by the local authority, fully supported by the government for tenants in situ”.

Viewers were left less than satisfied with the action Mr. Fleming suggested these people take and have been flocking to Twitter since the show aired to voice their opinions on the devastating matter.

One wrote: “Heartbreaking to watch mothers facing eviction with their children on #rtept no idea where they will go. A desperate situation in Ireland in 2023. Government couldn’t care less”.

“Sean Fleming TD is deeply taken by the plight of Laura and Caroline, but not concerned enough to stop throwing people out into homelessness,” a second viewer wrote.

Another simply said: “Shame on this government”.
