Prime Time presenter David McCullagh to co-anchor RTE Six One news with Caitriona Perry

Prime Time presenter David McCullagh has been announced as the newest co-anchor for the RTE Six One news.

RTE announced the news this afternoon that the broadcaster would be joining current anchor Catriona Perry on the flagship news programme.

McCullagh, who also co-presents the RTE Radio 1 show This Week, is set to take up the new role by September.

The veteran TV and radio presenter will step into the role which was previously held by Keelin Shanley, who tragically passed away earlier this year at the age of 51 following a battle with cancer.

Announcing the news, Director of RTE News and Current Affairs Jon Williams said: "David is one of Ireland's most formidable journalists. For seven years, at Prime Time, he’s sought answers from scientists to Taoisigh, moderating - with Miriam - our Election 2020 Leaders’ Debate, and helping the programme reach some of the biggest audiences in its history during the Covid-19 lockdown."

Williams added: "there could be no one better equipped to join Caitriona on Six One as Ireland emerges from this emergency facing some difficult challenges, and heads towards the centenary of the foundation of the State".

Co-anchor Caitriona Perry wrote on social media: "Really delighted to welcome the brilliant @mcculld to the @rtenews #SixOne as my new co-anchor.

"We’ve great plans for the programme and with a great team alongside us, we’ll build on what Keelin and I started."

David McCullagh said he was looking forward to joining the Six One team and "continuing the work of our much loved colleague, Keelin Shanley."

McCullagh began his career in journalism working at the Evening Press before joining RTE in 1993 before he was later appointed as RTE's Political Correspondent and subsequently joining Prime Time in 2013.
