Prime Minister says London lockdown 'not imminent' amid coronavirus pandemic

A lockdown of London is not imminent, the Prime Minister has said.

Boris Johnson was asked if there was to be a more 'substantial' lockdown of the capital as he addressed the public in his daily press conference.

Reports earlier suggested a London lockdown was likely to be announced, but Mr Johnson said there is 'no prospect' of closing down public transport in the capital.

He did however say the government 'may have to consider going further if people do follow the government’s advice on social distancing.

"If we feel that it isn’t working and we need to bring forward tougher measure, nothing is ruled out," the Prime Minister said.

"It is vital that people follow that advice. There is huge evidence that they are (social distancing) in the takings of the retail sector, the hospitality sector, TfL (Transport of London) in inner London down about 50 per cent, in outer London 60pc, but some evidence that in parts of the capital it is very patchy and some areas where people aren't following it in quite the way we need them to do."

He said there had been 'misunderstanding' about what would happen to public transport in the capital.

Mr Johnson said: "There is no prospect of us wanting to stop public transport in London or stop the Tube or the buses.

"We are going to want people to avoid gatherings where they transmit the disease.

"If it becomes necessary to do more to ensure that, we will certainly do so."
