Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants to make it easier for hospitals to employ nurses from abroad

Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised to recruit more nurses for hospitals like Kings Mill and Queen's Medical Centre during a visit to the city.

He praised the work of the NHS, especially at Queen's Medical Centre, after the hospital faced 'a black alert' due to the high number of ill patients using the service on Wednesday.

He said: "I have got to pay tribute to everyone at the QMC in the way they dealt with it. There are huge pressures in the NHS.

"We need to invest in infrastructure because interest rates are low. They have been low for a long time."

In September, the Conservatives announced a five-year programme to invest in the country's hospitals, which included brand new buildings.

It added Nottingham to the list of potential places that would benefit from the cash. They said the QMC would receive £100m in 'seed funding.'

But Mr Johnson wants to recruit more nurses, especially from overseas, adding to the 17,000 posts he said his party had created since 2010.

He said: "We need to recruit even more nurses. We are going to say a bit more about that later on. I have just been to Kings Mill and it is really impressive there.

"They have managed to take the staff shortages down to the lowest level. We want to help them and help to recruit, not just by funding but making it easier to recruit nurses from abroad."

He did not confirm the exact numbers, and said an announcement would be made shortly.
