Prime Minister Boris Johnson to make televised address to nation tonight as calls grow for full lockdown

Boris Johnson will make a televised address tonight outlining the next steps to tackle the rise in coronavirus cases.

It comes after the Prime Minister said there was "no question" that tougher measures needed to be brought in to curb the spread of the new highly transmissible strain of coronavirus.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister said: “The spread of the new variant of Covid-19 has led to rapidly escalating case numbers across the country.

“The Prime Minister is clear that further steps must now be taken to arrest this rise and to protect the NHS and save lives.

“He will set those out this evening.”

Parliament will be recalled to sit on Wednesday, Downing Street added.

The Prime Minister is facing mounting pressure to introduce stricter measures and has been warned not to delay an announcement.

Former health secretary Jeremy Hunt has called for a full national lockdown to include the closure of schools, while Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said new national restrictions need to be implemented within 24 hours.

Downing Street has said earlier today that the government was "waiting to see the impact of the Tier 4 measures".

Mr Johnson’s televised address is expected to take place at 8pm tonight.
