Prime Minister Boris Johnson's brother quits as MP over 'unresolvable tension'

Prime Minister Boris Johnson 's brother has quit politics after being "torn between family loyalty and the national interest".

Jo Johnson, the universities minister and MP for Orpington, Kent, tweeted today that there was an "unresolvable tension".

He has served his constituents since 2009, but will stand down from Government, which he regards as having been an "honour" to serve.

He wrote: "It's been an honour to represent Orpington for 9 years & to serve as a minister under three PMs.

"In recent weeks I've been torn between family loyalty and the national interest - it's an unresolvable tension & time for others to take on my roles as MP & Minister. #overandout"

Boris Johnson is at odds with his younger brother who is pro-EU, and has previously called for a second referendum on the Brexit vote.
