Prime Minister Boris Johnson moved to intensive care as coronavirus symptoms worsen

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been moved to intensive care after his coronavirus symptoms worsened, Downing Street has confirmed.

The PM has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the First Secretary of State, to deputise for him where necessary

A spokesperson for No.10 said: “Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the Prime Minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.

“The PM has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the First Secretary of State, to deputise for him where necessary.

“The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication.”

Mr Johnson announced on March 27 that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and was self-isolating with "mild symptoms" including a high temperature and persistent cough.

The total number of people in the UK tested since the outbreak began – 208,837 – is the equivalent of around 313 people in every 100,000, or 0.3% of the population.

The latest figures released by Public Health England (PHE) revealed on Monday, April 6, cases of coronavirus in both the city and county have increased.

In 24 hours, there has been a further 13 cases confirmed in Nottingham, bringing the total to 204.

In Nottinghamshire, there has now been 425 people who have tested positive for coronavirus, up from 413 - an increase of 12.

The current death toll stands at 39 for patients who have died in Nottingham hospitals and 27 for those that have died in the county.

PHE revealed the number of people who have died after testing positive for Covid-19 has risen to 5,373 in the UK - up by 439 in 24 hours.
