Primary Wave to host pre-Grammy party, competes with Clive Davis

Larry Mestel hosting pre-Grammy party to rival Clive Davis’ annual bash.

The Grammy awards are undoubtedly a huge event in the music industry, and with it comes a host of glamorous parties and star-studded gatherings. One notable pre-Grammy party that has always been the talk of the town is hosted by Clive Davis, a music industry veteran and legendary producer. However, it seems that Davis may have some competition this year.

Larry Mestel, the CEO of Primary Wave, a prominent music publishing company, is hosting a pre-Grammy party to rival Davis' annual bash. Primary Wave owns the rights to some of the most iconic tunes by artists such as Prince, Bob Marley, and Whitney Houston. Their party, scheduled for February 1st, is set to celebrate Billboard No. 1s and will take place at the luxurious Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, just a stone's throw away from Davis' party at the nearby Beverly Hilton.

While Primary Wave has hosted parties on the same night as Davis' in the past, this year's location has raised eyebrows in the industry. The proximity of the two events has led to speculation about potential rivalry between the two parties. However, industry insiders are quick to dismiss this notion, stating that there is simply no comparison between the two.

Clive Davis' pre-Grammy gala has been a staple for over 50 years. It has seen some of the biggest names in the music industry grace its stage, including Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, and the late Whitney Houston, whom Davis introduced to the world at the gala over three decades ago. Tragically, Houston was found dead in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton on the day of the gala in 2012.

One industry source emphasized the significance of Davis' party, stating, 'There's no comparison.' They went on to describe the Primary Wave party as more of an overflow event for those who didn't make it onto the guest list for other parties. Despite these comments, representatives from Primary Wave are quick to dismiss any notion of competition and claim that both parties are well-received by attendees.

Primary Wave's spokesperson mentioned that their company has been hosting pre-Grammy parties for 15 years, and everyone enjoys attending both events. It's worth noting that Billboard is co-hosting Primary Wave's upcoming bash, and its owner, Jay Penske, is also expected to make an appearance at Davis' party.

As for Clive Davis, he is pulling out all the stops for his gala. A-listers like Jay-Z and Beyoncé are expected to attend, alongside industry giants like Sylvia Rhone and Monte and Avery Lipman from Republic Records. The gala will also honor Sony Music Publishing CEO Jon Platt with the prestigious Industry Icons Award.

In the end, despite the close proximity and overlapping guest lists, these pre-Grammy parties offer a chance for music industry professionals and celebrities to come together and celebrate the power of music. Whether it's Davis' legendary gathering or Primary Wave's more intimate affair, both events contribute to the excitement and anticipation surrounding the Grammy awards weekend.
