Primary school that will treble in size to open next year

A new primary school in Frenchay is now expected to open in September 2022 - two years later than initially planned.

Frenchay CofE Primary School is currently located in Church Road, but it is being moved onto the former Frenchay Hospital site 700 metres away.

There are currently 140 places at Frenchay Primary School, but the new school will see its capacity trebled to 420.

Last year, council leaders said Covid-19 had dealt a major blow to plans to rebuild the school, saying contractors were not able to commit to costs or timescales because of the pandemic, so South Gloucestershire Council was “unable to move forward” with their appointment.

The school was originally expected to open in September 2020, but this was then put back by a year.

The council has now launched a consultation to increase admission numbers at the school from 20 to 30 with effect from September 2023.

However, the council has clarified the new school building for Frenchay Primary School is expected to open in September 2022.

Cabinet member for education, learning and employment Cllr Erica Williams said last month: “It’s excellent to see the construction of the new school building for Frenchay Primary School well underway, we have been planning this project for some time and I am delighted to see the building take shape.

"Our number one priority is to improve school standards in South Gloucestershire and this significant investment will provide local children with an improved learning environment in which they can achieve their full potential.”

The school has no room to expand at its current location in Church Road so it is moving onto the former Frenchay Hospital site 700 metres away.

Frenchay Hospital - a former Georgian mansion that was used as an American Army hospital during World War Two - closed in December 2014 and the same month outline plans were approved to redevelop the 29-hectare site with up to 490 homes, a new health and social care unit and a primary school.

Katherine Marks, headteacher at Frenchay CofE Primary School, said: “Every member of our community is very excited about the move to the new school building. It will offer us so much space to extend our curriculum and learning opportunities. "

The consultation is open until January 28, you can view it here.
