Primary school students set to protest in response to rising air pollution levels

North Bristol primary schools will be staging a climate change demonstration next week, as pupils, parents and teachers plan to line busy roads in the city.

Since Bristol City Council  launched the clean air consultation on July 1, the demand for action has increased across schools in Bristol.

Initially started by children, parents and teachers at Sefton Park Primary School in May, it quickly caught the attention of Brunel Field Primary School who carried out their own protest in June. Now, Ashley Down Primary School are joining these schools taking action.

On July 19 from 8.15 - 8.45 am, just before the start of the school day, children along with their parents and teachers will line the pavements along Ashley Down Road up to Gloucester Road.

There will be banners and speeches to gain the support of cyclists, motorists and passers in an attempt to raise awareness of Climate Change and encourage chnage.

Helen Jackson Brown who came up with the idea and organised the first protest said, "We are empowering our young people who are concerned about Climate Change to have a voice in their future and to express their concerns to those in positions of power and the general public.

"This is a very powerful lesson for them."

The organisers hope that the impact on people seeing school after school demonstrating against climate change on their commute to work will inspire more people to get involved and get their voices heard.

Sarah George a parent at Brunel Fields said: "Wouldn't it be great if this spread across the whole city or even across the country?

"Imagine how great the impact would be then!"
