Primary school shuts for at least a week following 'major flooding'

A primary school in Leigh has been closed for one week after a sprinkler malfunction caused flooding on three floors of its building. Parents whose children go to Leigh Central Primary School were alerted on Sunday afternoon (May 8) that the school will be closed for one week and possibly longer after 'major flooding' caused damage to the classrooms and corridors.

The school say they are working closely with local authorities to assess the damage and clear the mess caused by the flood. In a message sent to parents, the school said that they have have applied for a 24 hour delay to SATs for the children who were set to take them this week in order to find a 'safe space in school' that they can use.

Leigh Central share a building with neighbouring school Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School on Windermere Road. Headteacher for Sacred Heart, Mrs Helen Ahmed, also sent a message to parents detailing the damage caused by a 'sprinkler malfunction', however they say they will remain open as usual.
