Primary school sends home three classes over covid as cases in area rise

A Merseyside primary school has sent three classes home to isolate after positive cases of Covid-19 were identified within the school.

Trinity St Peter's Primary in Formby has written to parents this weekend to confirm the outbreak of cases and the action being taken.

The news comes amid a rise in cases in the Formby area.

In a letter, headteacher Deborah Pringle said: "As you may be aware, there have been positive cases of Covid-19 within our school community.

"This has resulted in three classes having to self isolate and continue their learning remotely."

She said that while public health agencies have 'no concerns' regarding the school's systems and protocols, they have confirmed that there is an increase in Covid-19 cases in small clusters in the Formby area.

There has been a sharp rise in the Covid-19 infection rate in Sefton in recent days - with the borough rate for the week leading up to May 6 standing at 49 cases per 100,000 people.

There were 89 new cases of the virus identified in the borough in just three days between May 4 and 6.

That's nearly five times as high as the infection rates in neighbouring Liverpool or Knowsley.

It is thought that much of that increase is due to outbreaks in the Formby area specifically.

Last week F ormby Pool, a leisure centre in the area was forced to close over an outbreak of the virus.

The facility, in Elbow Lane, is part-way through a 10-day closure after a number of cases were linked to it.

The latest news from St Peter's Primary School appears to confirm that there is an issue with cases in the coastal town.

In her letter to parents, Mrs Pringle said that the clusters of cases in Formby mean it is 'paramount that we continue to work together to contain the spread of Covid-19 in order to keep everyone in our community safe."

She urged families to continue to follow all rules and guidance both set out by the government and within the school's own plans.

She said if any parent, child or household member begins to display any symptoms of the virus, they should stay at home and get tested straight away.

She added: "I continue to be very grateful for all that you are doing to prevent the further spread of Covid-19 within our school and local community to keep everyone safe.

"The swift action taken by families who have been directly affected by Covid-19 is very much appreciated as is your continued support and understanding."

One parent who spoke to the ECHO said that while it was concerning to see the numbers rising in the Formby area, he was impressed with the school's swift actions, adding that the overall handing of the pandemic has been good throughout.
