Primary school's beloved learning bus trashed by vandals

A double-decker bus used as a learning space for children with special needs was trashed by vandals.

The play area of St Hugh of Lincoln RC Primary in Stretford was broken into on Saturday night.

The converted nurture bus was wrecked during the break-in, as well as a 'hobbit house' play area for reception children.

The windows of the bus were smashed and interior ruined. Empty alcohol bottles were left strewn all over the floor.

Headteacher Mark Mountcastle described the break-in as 'sickening'.

"It's been completely trashed," he said.

"There were empty bottles of Malibu and rum on the floor. It looks like they've broken in and spent the night drinking in there.

"It's devastating that a group of people could do so much damage to our property; property that we have worked so hard to maintain.

The double-decker bus was donated to the school by the BBC and featured on the Dengineers show in 2018.

It was transformed into a nurturing space for children with additional learning needs.

Pupils at the primary school also use the bus for reading and baking.

Mr Mountcastle, who's been head for 15 years, said the school had been inundated with kind offers of help from parents and members of the community.

A local joiner immediately offered his services for free after hearing about the break-in on Monday, and has already made the bus safe.

Mr Mountcastle added: "People have been fabulously kind.

"Parents have donated money for repairs and people who don't have a connection to the school have emailed in asking how the can help.

"Obviously people have been struggling due to the events of the past year, yet there's been such a huge and generous response.

"A joiner just turned up at the school yesterday and offered to board it up. Trafford Recycling have offered to help too. We really have been overwhelmed."

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that they were investigating the break-in.

A GMP spokesperson said: "At around 9.15am on Monday 8 February 2021, police received a report of an earlier burglary on Glastonbury Road, Stretford.

"An investigation is underway."
