Primary school pupils in Bestwood target tested for Covid 'variant of concern'

More than a quarter of pupils and parents at a Nottingham primary school took coronavirus tests after cases linked to the Indian variant were detected.

Targeted testing is being carried out after Public Health England identified cases of coronavirus related to the Indian variant at Henry Whipple Primary in Bestwood.

Testing is being carried out as a "precautionary measure" until Friday, May 21.

David Johns, Interim Director of Public Health in Nottingham, said: “We have today started testing for the variant of concern with pupils and parents at Henry Whipple Primary in Bestwood. More than a quarter of pupils and parents were tested on the first morning, which is a great response. This will continue throughout the week.

"We will continue target testing in settings linked to variants of concern in Nottingham but it is important that no one is alarmed by the need for this testing in our city."

It comes after some parents told Nottinghamshire Live that they would not be taking a test.
