Primary school pupils' colourful day ensures boost for St Andrew's Hospice despite cancellation of annual event

Big-hearted youngsters at a primary school in Wishaw raised over £1500 for St Andrew’s Hospice.

Bright P7 pupils at St Ignatius’ Primary weren’t able to take part in the annual sponsored walk this year but they still stood out by organising a wear yellow day.

The rest of the school also got involved in a host of fundraising activities, among them coin tossing competitions and painting.

Pupils at the school situated at the joint campus at Lochpark also came up with the idea of making special St Andrew’s Hospice badges and they sold out.

P7 teacher Miss Laura Irvine explained: “Normally all primary sevens from schools in North Lanarkshire do a sponsored walk around Strathclyde Park wearing yellow.

“That was cancelled so the head teacher suggested we do some fund- raising to try and raise the money we would normally.

“Because of the restrictions we couldn’t do the stuff we usually do with the whole school such as scavenger hunts.

“We had a meeting with a St Andrew’s Hospice worker and they gave us a virtual tour of the hospice and we asked for ideas.

“I came up with the idea of starting a JustGiving page as the pupils can’t go round family members’ houses. It was easier to send out a link.

“We got a great response. Normally we get in around £200 and this year we raised £1548.70, so that’s something we will continue in the future.

“It was fun because every day the kids would come in asking ‘what’s the total?’

“We had a fundraising day on the Friday where we came up with more things to do and raised over £400 within the school.

The school’s head teacher, Mrs Anne-Marie Pearson, added: “With the sponsored walk being cancelled we had to think of different ways.

“We are just so pleased with the amount we managed to raise.”
