Primary school principal died after saving children from bus crash

A primary school principal who died by saving children from being hit by a bus has been hailed as a “hero”.

Susan Jordan was killed when she was hit by the bus after pushing several children out of harm’s way as the vehicle drove onto the pavement.

The principal of Amy Beverland Elementary School in Indianapolis died at the scene on Tuesday.

Two other 10-year-old students were also hit and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as reported by the Indianapolis Star.

The bus was carrying 25 students but none of them were injured.

Investigators are looking into why the bus mounted the kerb.

Eyewitnesses said Ms Jordan risked her own life to make sure the children were out of harm’s way.

The school’s Facebook page confirmed Ms Jordan’s death. She was principal at the school for 22 years.

“Our district has lost an amazing educator. Principal, Mrs. Susan Jordan, was killed this afternoon in a bus accident at Amy Beverland. We ask for your thoughts and prayers for all involved in the tragic events of this afternoon.”

Last year the school's website posted a video of tributes to Ms Jordan, thanking her for being an "amazing principal".

The Lawrence township school board also released a statement after her death, describing Ms Jordan as “an amazing educator”.
