Primary school has confirmed coronavirus case days before children set to go back

A primary school has confirmed it has a positive case of coronavirus, days before children are set to go back across the country.

Parents and carers of students at the Woolaston Primary School in Lydney received a letter explaining that an individual had tested positive for Covid-19.

The person is believed to have contracted the the deadly virus at a holiday club that was being held at the school, reports GloucestershireLive.

Acting headteacher Emma Gomersall said the school underwent a deep clean on Wednesday and Thursday following the discovery.

Those who were in contact with the individual who has Covid-19 have been 'identified, contacted and know if they need to exclude themselves from school'.

In the letter, which was sent out yesterday, the acting headteacher said: "I can confirm that an individual who attended the holiday club at the school has tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently getting all necessary support and advice from health services."

"Whilst I fully understand this will cause anxiety amongst the school community, I can assure you all necessary steps are being taken to minimise risk to others."

The news comes as children in many parts of England prepare to go back to school tomorrow and with this in mind, the letter states that the primary school will remain open.

The acting headteacher went on to say: "I would urge you to remain calm and continue to be responsible with your comments and actions, so as not to cause unnecessary anxiety for our pupils, staff and the wider area."

Students and parents have been urged to follow public health advice; including washing hands with soap and water and hand sanitiser as well as catching coughs and sneezes in a tissue which should then be thrown away.

She added: "The school remains open and providing your child remains well they can continue to attend school as normal. We will keep this under review."
