A primary school has been forced to temporarily close after a confirmed case of coronavirus.
Milton St John's CE Primary School, in Mossley, Tameside, is shut while a risk assessment is being carried out to identify which pupils and staff now need to self-isolate.
Like most schools in the UK, the primary had been kept open for the children of key workers and those deemed vulnerable.
It has not been revealed whether it was a child or staff member who tested positive for the virus, but one villager told the Manchester Evening News that people living in the area need to be taking social distancing measures more seriously.
She said: "People around here are not social distancing in the shops and loads have been out in the gardens having barbecues with people not from their households. People need reminding that it's in our village."
The school is working closely with Public Health England to determine the next steps that will be taken.
A Tameside Council spokesman said: “There is a confirmed case of COVID-19 in Milton St John’s Primary School. The school has temporarily closed while, following advice from Public Health England (PHE), it does a detailed risk assessment to identify which staff and pupils need to self-isolate and which can return to school while remaining vigilant for symptoms, according to PHE’s guidance.
"The council’s Population Health and Education teams are working closely to support the school at this time, and are liaising with PHE to ensure that all the most up to date advice is being followed.”
The news comes after three members of staff at a school in Wigan tested positive for Covid-19.
Wigan council confirmed the workers at Hope School and College, in Marus Bridge, have the virus.
Two deep cleans of the building have been carried out and those who have come into contact with the staff members have been informed.
The council said the school will still remain open, following advice from Public Health England.
