Primary school closes multiple classes following Covid outbreak

A primary school has closed several classes following coronavirus outbreak.

Brackla Primary School, in Bridgend, sent out an email to parents on Tuesday notifying of the closure and leaving parents less than 24 hours to make arrangements for childcare. In total 14 staff and 31 pupils are off meaning three classes have closed.

The classes will be closed for a week in line with official isolation guidelines and the school hopes pupils and staff will be able to return on December 7.

A spokesman for Bridgend County Borough Council said: "We can confirm that due to an outbreak of Covid-19, 14 staff and 31 pupils at Brackla Primary School are currently off. As a result three classes are currently closed.

"The school’s hoping to reopen the classes on December 7, staff permitting."

A parent told WalesOnline that they were given less than 24 hours' notice to ensure their children would be cared for during the closure.

The closure follows Bridgend council's decision to cancel Christmas lunches in all its schools saying there are not enough staff to run the traditional festive end-of-term meal.

Elsewhere a primary school teaching more than 100 children has been forced to close following a Covid outbreak among both staff and pupils.

Powys Council stated the school could not be "safely" opened due to the shortages.
