Primary school closed after staff Christmas event COVID scare

A primary school in Canberra's north has closed completely on Friday after all staff were found to be casual contacts of a COVID-19 case.

Families of Palmerston District Primary School were told not to send their children to school on Friday while all staff were tested for the virus.

It is understood the staff attended a Christmas event at the weekend and have since found out they are casual contacts.

An Education Directorate spokesman confirmed a large number of staff at the school were exposed to the virus at a private venue.

"In line with the ACT Health advice about casual contacts, all casual contacts from the school will be getting one COVID test," he said.

"There is no requirement for people who live in the same household as these staff, or students of the school, to get a COVID test as a result of this casual exposure.

"A small number of staff not impacted by the casual exposure were on site at the school in case supervision of students was required.

"We anticipate the school will reopen on Monday."

All primary school teachers are required to be vaccinated for COVID-19 under an ACT Health direction.

The spokesman said all staff were compliant with the mandate.
