Primary pupils to be moved into temporary classrooms in car park to deal with 'overcrowding' at Ayrshire school

Pupils at a Kilmarnock primary are to be moved into temporary classrooms in a car park as education chiefs wrestle with 'overcrowding' in schools.

Annanhill Primary students are set to be taught in the new modular buildings on the Grange Academy campus under new plans.

According to documents, two new classrooms will be constructed in a Grange Academy car park at the Grange Terrace end of the campus.

The new structures — set to be used for 18 months before being reviewed — will each be able to host 20 occupants and will both have a store cupboard.

The two classrooms will be joined by a shared entrance and cloakroom and use of a disabled toilet and a separate unisex toilet.

The unit will be bordered by a boundary fence too, planning documents show.

Some Annanhill pupils are currently being taught in Grange Academy classrooms after the school population rocketed.

Earlier this year we reported that primary kids felt 'unsafe' sharing toilets with the secondary pupils.

A council report from March read: “corridors and stairwells are overcrowded, congested and at times present a challenge to the safety and wellbeing of our children and young people.”

It added: “Access to toilets and hand-washing facilities presents a significant challenge to children and young people. Overcrowding in toilets is common and children from Annanhill Primary feel unsafe sharing facilities with the secondary school.”

To solve the problem, officials recommended limiting P1 places at Annanhill Primary to 60 and conducting a review of the whole campus.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the overall Grange campus had a capacity of 1860 pupils – but there was 1953 children registered.

Annanhill has room for 459 pupils but the school had 526 students in March this year.

Proposals for the modular classrooms on the Grange campus will be ruled on by councillors at a future date.
