Primark starts click and collect trial - but not in the North East

Low-cost fashion retailer Primark has revealed the 25 stores which it will be launching a click and collect trial - but none of them are in the North East.

The chain, which has stores in Newcastle, Metrocentre, Sunderland and Hartlepool, relaunched its website earlier this year, but does not let shoppers buy online. It announced in June that it would be trialling a click and collect service in the North West of England, but has only announced the stores taking part this week.

The retailer says the stores chosen are a mix of large city centre and out-of-town stores as well as smaller high street locations, and shoppers will be able to choose from an extended children's range, including hundreds of items that are exclusive to its click and collect service. Customers will be able to browse the range online, choose their preferred collection day and then collect from a dedicated collection point at their nominated store.

The 25 selected stores are across the North West of England, Yorkshire and North Wales, with the store in Carlisle, Cumbria, being the nearest one to our region. This will be the first time Primark customers will be able to buy online and then collect at stores.

The pilot is starting with children's products because of "unfulfilled demand" and because the retailer thinks this will drive people to its stores. A spokesperson for Primark told The Mirror when the plan was announced: "Our average-size stores are only able to stock a limited range and for these customers the number of options available to them will broadly double, increasing even more for customers of our small stores. This trial will enable us to provide more fashion, licence and lifestyle products to more customers and more often.”

Kari Rodgers, Primark UK retail director, said: “We're thrilled that customers across North West England, parts of Yorkshire and North Wales, will soon be the first in the country to get the chance to try out our new Click + Collect offer.

"From launch, they’ll be able to browse and buy from our extensive range of kids clothing and nursery products, from the comfort of their own home, before coming to collect from one of our chosen 25 stores."

This news follows the announcement in August that Primark is protecting the prices on more than a thousand essential kids’ products in response to the increasing pressure felt by households up and down the country.
