Primark's huge new home range has hit Bristol and we checked it out

With the bombshell news that M&S is set to follow Debenhams in closing its main Bristol branch, Primark could soon be the only department store anchoring that corner of Broadmead.

Perhaps due in part to its reluctance to offer its goods online, the budget retailer seems to be as popular as ever while other chains fall victim to changes on the high street.

Shoppers still make the detour in search of a bargain at its huge unit along The Horsefair, which was once home to John Lewis, and many head straight downstairs to the home department.

Earlier this month it announced that it is expanding its homeware department in 25 stores, including in Bristol, offering new items including chairs, sideboards, shelving units, and side tables as well as mirrors, rugs, wall art and lights.

Speaking about the expansion of Primark Home, trading director Paul Baldwin said “There has been exceptional growth within our home and lifestyle department over the past 18 months as people have spent more time in their home.

"Naturally we wanted to keep up with this growing customer demand and expand our offering into small furniture and several other new categories.”

We checked out the new range in the Bristol branch last week and found a huge selection of items, ranging from the beautiful to the bizarre.

The pricing for some products seemed expensive by Primark standards, but still less then most other high street retailers.

Here is a glimpse at some of the items we spotted:

Plastic plants galore

There is a whole corner dedicated to faux house plants and planters of all sizes, including hanging plants and floral door wreaths.

If you're prone to letting real house plants die and prefer a low-maintenance plastic version, it's worth checking out.

Absolutely massive candles

If you're obsessed with candles you will love the massive section filled solely with luxury-looking candles, diffusers and room spritz. There were some gigantic candles offered in various scents, almost the size of a football, which were too heavy to hobble home with.

Wicker everywhere

Wicker, rattan and cane seems to be having a moment in interior fashion, and it's everywhere you look in the Bristol store - plant pots, table mats, napkin holders, baskets and everything in between.

This light shade was £12, and it looks like a dupe of this Habitat one.

Small furniture

Primark offered some furniture before with items like its popular drinks trolley, but it has expanded its range in Bristol. We found various side tables and even this £60 sideboard.

There was also a £25 'tray trolley' on wheels - also rattan, naturally.

A crepe maker

Among the more random products we spotted on the shelves were the small electrical kitchen items.

If you're in the market for a crepe maker, you might be surprised to learn that you can now buy one in Primark - this one was priced at £22.

There was also a popcorn machine and a waffle maker - retro.

Garment steamer

On the subject of random things, this handheld garment steamer was another. It was priced at £30 and looks like it might be a bit more fun (but potentially more of a faff) than ironing.

Art deco lamp

Another retro throwback, this fringed lamp also caught our eye, although admittedly it's not to everyone's taste if you don't like gold or tassels.

There were plenty of other table lights in store too, and this one probably the most expensive at a price of £30.

Curtains, crockery, large wall mirrors and wall art were among some of the other products on offer that we hadn't noticed in store prior to the expansion.

We didn't find any rugs during our visit, but left the shop with a handful of restrained purchases including a £2.50 cushion cover and a £6 wine rack.
