Primark, M&S, Aldi and Waitrose confirm they will stay open late after lockdown

Primark has confirmed it plans to extend its opening hours in December, as have M&S, Aldi and Waitrose.

Clothes retailer Primark confirmed to Birmingham Live that it will operate for longer than usual once it is allowed to reopen around England after the lockdown ends on December 3.

A spokeswoman for Primark said: "Associated British Foods Plc are calling for extended trading hours for Primark stores once they re-open in December."

Primark has not yet confirmed what its new opening hours will be.

When Primark reopened after the spring-summer lockdown, there were regular lengthy queues outside its store in Northumberland Street, Newcastle.

Shoppers queued again to get into Primark stores shortly before the retailer closed for lockdown.

Supermarkets are also extending their hours in the run-up to Christmas.

Aldi says its supermarkets around the North East will open until 11pm between December 21 and December 23, while Waitrose will close its larger supermarkets like its branches in Hexham and Ponteland at 10pm in the same period.

M&S says it will keep shops open until midnight on December 21, 22 and 23, for around two-thirds of its 400 stores. Others will shut at 10pm.

Sacha Berendji, M&S’s Retail, operations and property director said: "We want our customers to be able to shop with confidence this Christmas, which means supporting social distancing in our stores and minimal queueing outside as the weather gets colder.

"To help with this, we’ll be operating our longest ever opening hours just before Christmas.

"Along with the wider industry, we continue to ask for Sunday trading hours to be extended to help us increase our capacity to serve everyone safely this festive season."
