Arthur Ryan, founder of Primark, has died aged 83 following a short illness.
The businessman founded the first Primark store in Dublin in 1969.
The company confirmed the chairman and former CEO's death on Monday.
Primark chief executive Paul Marchant said the firm is "greatly saddened" by Mr Ryan's death, adding that he was a "truly gifted retailer and a visionary leader".
Mr Marchant added in a statement: “He was a true retail pioneer. He innovated and was never complacent, despite many successes. He challenged us all to be the best we can be.
“His drive and passion was always shown alongside great humility, integrity and support for our people. All of these characteristics remain guiding principles at Primark today.”
Primark, which is now in its 50th year, employs more than 75,000 people.
