Primark forced to close after reaching 'full capacity' on first weekend since shops reopened

A Primark store in England was forced to close amid safety fears after becoming packed on the first weekend of opening since lockdown rules were eased.

The rammed store in Bradford shut its doors early yesterday after reaching ‘full capacity’, Leeds Live reports.

The store was inundated with hundreds of customers and bosses at the Kirkgate Shopping Centre in the city centre said the decision to close was based on safeguarding issues.

April 12 marked Stage Two of the Government roadmap out of lockdown which saw hospitality businesses and non-essential shops open for the first time in months.

Huge queues formed outside Primark stores across the country last Monday, including in Bristol, which featured on a recent episode of Channel 4’s Gogglebox.

A spokesman for the Kirkgate Shopping Centre said: "Primark has been extremely busy today (Saturday) and are currently at full capacity.

"The decision has been made to stop entry into the store from immediate effect. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause to our shoppers.

"This decision has been made to safeguard both staff and customers.

"Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to welcoming you back."
