Primark explains why their stores have a different name in the Republic of Ireland

Primark is one of the most popular discounted retail chains in the UK with shoppers going crazy for their budget-friendly outfits, homewear and make-up.

However you have think that the name Penneys rings a bell and this is because that's how it's known in the Republic of Ireland.

Yep - it has a completely different name - but why?

The store first opened in 1969 in Dublin and was originally named Penneys - the name it still goes by in Ireland.

Talking about their history, Primark explained that their first store was opened on Mary Street was by Dublin-born retailer Arthur Ryan on behalf of the Weston family who had been in the "retail business for years."

Ryan previously worked for Dunnes Stores and he was hired by Garfield Weston to set up a discount clothing chain and today the store has more than 370 across the world.

Taking to their website, they wrote: "Penneys is still a household name in Ireland, building its success by offering customers up-to-the-minute fashions at value-for-money prices. Barely a day passes when people don’t boast about where they got their shirt or trousers: 'Penneys, just €11' they’ll say. Today, Penneys employs thousands of people at its Irish stores – and in the eyes of many Dubliners, Primark will always be Penneys.

"So why the change of name to Primark? In 1973, Ryan decided to expand into mainland Britain and opened a store in Derby. However, the Penney name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer, J. C. Penney, had the right to use the name in the region.

"Primark was the name born from that and, since then, all stores opened around the world have adopted it."
