Primark Belfast update over ongoing work at Bank Buildings

Primark has issued an update over ongoing work at the old Bank Buildings in Belfast.

The building was badly damaged after the fire in August last year and fourteen businesses fell within the safety cordon.

The cordon has been reduced several times, most recently connecting Donegall Place and Castle Street.

That has resulted in the reopening of Zara, Abacus Beads - and in the near future City Picnic and Tesco.

Primark opened a store in December on Castle Street. They will open a further store on Donegall Place at the old New Look site.

A spokeswoman told Belfast Live that they are 'committed to opening the Castle Place junction as soon as possible'.

She said: "We continue to work on the retention system for the recovery of Bank Buildings.

"Primark remains focused on securing the building as we enter each phase of work.

"The protective cordon has been reduced in places where it has been safe to do so and we are committed to opening up the Castle Place junction as soon as possible."

Speaking about the opening of Zara today, Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said: “This is another welcome step forward for Belfast city centre.

“Zara contributes a significant amount of footfall and is an important part of part of the city centre’s retail offering.

“While good progress is being made, we still have some way to go to fully rejuvenate that part of the city centre.

“Retail NI will continue to work at all levels of government to see appropriate funding in place to achieve this."
