Primal Scream star Bobby Gillespie declares support for Scottish independence

Primal Scream star Bobby Gillespie has declared his support for Scottish independence despite previously criticising nationalism.

The rock singer from the southside of Glasgow is a long-term Labour supporter.

His father, Bob senior, is a veteran trade union campaigner and stood for the party as a candidate at the famous 1988 Govan by-election won by the SNP.

But Gillespie - whose band are known for their classic albums Screamadelica and XTRMNTR - claimed that independence was now "inevitable".

"Scottish independence is coming. We support it," he said in a message posted on the band's Twitter page on Sunday.

"Would love to see a real plan for the future. A radical plan. Way to the left of the SNP. But remember, the E.U. is a neo-liberal construct. It won't be easy. Ask the Greeks."

In a follow-up message posted today, he added: "Just to be clear. I am not a nationalist. I come from an international socialist / class politics background.

"However, I do think that Scottish independence is inevitable. That doesn't make me a nationalist."

In an interview with the Record in 2013, Gillespie admitted that living in London removed him from the heart of the political argument leading up to the 2014 referendum.

“I can’t look in terms of Scotland. It’s bigger than that,” he said at the time.

“People in Liverpool have been hammered, Manchester and Southampton. All over. Everybody has been hammered, not just the Scottish.

“We can’t be nationalistic about it. Nationalism has never done it for me. It leads to fascism.

“Ultimately, someone like Alex Salmond manipulates people’s national pride and insecurities but he is obviously a power-mad kind of guy.”
