Priest voices disappointment following church break-in in Belcoo

A parish priest has voiced his disappointment after a local church in Co Fermanagh was broken into on Friday morning.

Damage was caused to a window at St Patrick’s Church, Holywell in Belcoo and entry was gained to the church some time on Thursday night.

Nothing was taken during the burglary, but a sliding window between the altar and the sacristy was smashed.

Cleenish parish priest Fr Séamus Quinn said he could not understand why anyone would cause damage such as this to a local community.

“It’s part of life now, there are a number of churches locally this has happened to in the last few months,” Fr Quinn said.

“They didn’t take anything and they would have gotten nothing anyway, it doesn’t make any sense.

“I’d suggest to these people that they should think about their fellow human beings.

“I don’t know what kind of person would do this, but we all need to think about how our actions affect our fellow man and woman.”

Police in the area said they were investigating the report of a burglary at a church in Belcoo, and asked for anyone with information to come forward.

“Police are appealing for information and witnesses following a report of a burglary at a church on Belcoo Road East in Belcoo,” a spokesperson said.

Sergeant Laird said: "Police received a report just after 8.30am this morning (Friday 29th October) that the church had been broken into sometime overnight. Damage was caused to a window. However, thankfully, it seems that nothing was taken.

"I would ask anyone who has any information about this incident to contact police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 332 29/10/21, or submit a report online using our non-emergency reporting form via http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/ . You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at http://crimestoppers-uk.org/ ."
