‘Priest made anti-Muslim speech during mass’

KOTTAYAM: Sister Anupama, one of the nuns who took part in the agitations seeking action against former Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal for allegedly raping a nun, on Sunday said she does not support the “love & drug Jihad” remarks made by Pala bishop Mar Joseph Kalarangatt.

Speaking to reporters in their convent in Kuravilangad, she said she, along with another nun, walked out of the Sunday mass held in the chapel of the convent after a priest began to make anti-Muslim remarks in line with the comments made by the Pala bishop.

The priest was speaking in English since some nuns here are from other states, said sister Anupama, adding, what was the need for him to tell all this to us? The nun said that the priest even said that Christian community members are given medicines to ensure that children are not born to them. On earlier occasions he has spoken in an insulting manner about the Muslim community. But on Sunday, we could not stop from reacting and we told him during the mass that he cannot talk this way, she said.

It was painful for us to hear him talking in such a manner about them. There are teachers, doctors, and policemen, among Muslims, who protect us. Neither we nor our relatives have ever faced any difficulties from them. Then why should we listen to all this, she asked.
