Pride of Britain girl, 12, battling kidney illness honoured for helping other kids

Despite having battled serious illness all her life, brave Ella Chadwick never stops smiling or putting others before herself.

The 12-year-old, born with a rare kidney disease, has raised thousands of pounds for charity and was named Child of Courage at the Mirror’s 2018 Pride of Britain Awards, in partnership with TSB.

And we reckon the selfless star, who this year wowed on Britain’s Got Talent with signing choir Sign Along With Us, deserves to have that smile made even wider.

So Ella will be the first recipient of a £1,500 prize from the new Pride of Britain Fund, matched by TSB to give her £3,000.

Mum Karen Hughes, 39, said: “We’re thinking of giving her a grown-up girl’s bedroom, at the moment it’s plain and boring.

“She’s seen things she likes, a silver crushed velvet bed and pink wallpaper with a geometric print. I’m trying to keep it a secret until it’s all done.”

Ella, of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, had dialysis for six years and 40 ops, suffering several strokes.

She also has diabetes and uses a frame to walk. But since a kidney swap in 2014, she has raised cash for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
