Young people across Britain are returning to university, facing new beginnings: a new academic year, new friends and, of course, a new home. But what if your accommodation isn’t up to scratch?
Student digs have been in the news a lot lately, with the upper echelons of student living nabbing the headlines on Monday – with a story about a designer pad on Park Lane with a weekly rent of £4,000.
This comes amid protests across the country due to extortionate student rents. Martin Blakey, chief executive of student housing charity Unipol, said the expansion of high-end accommodation was pricing students out. For example, in London, the proportion of more expensive studio flats has increased from 6% in 2011-12 to 29% in 2015-16, according to NUS/Unipol research.
