'Priceless' - Ian Rankin snaps selfie Alan Cumming in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens

This could be the beginning of a great tale, after two icons ran into each other while out on a "quiet" stroll in Edinburgh over the weekend.

Quick-witted crime author Ian Rankin and Perthsire-born Alan Cummings, who is an actor among other talents, bumped into each other in Princes Street Gardens yesterday afternoon.

Sharing an epic selfie of the pair, Ian Rankin tweeted: "The folk you meet when you’re having a quiet walk through Princes Street Gardens... @Alancumming ."

Fans of the pair couldn't contain their excitement over the meeting of the century, with the photo racking up over 3,000 likes and the duo were dubbed "double trouble".

One fan said: "My God this f***** made my weekend", while another added "what a fab pic".

Jim Milbery even suggested that Cummings would make an excellent villain in a Rebus movie - it seems people have forgotten his evil role as  Boris Grishenko in GoldenEye 007, where he met a particularly chilling end."

Joe Goldblatt said on Twitter: "Wow! Two icons of Scottish culture. I must spend more time walking in Princes Street Gardens!"

Did you spot the pair out and about yesterday? We wouldn't be surprised if they paid a visit to The Oxford Bar, where the likes of Pierce Brosnan have been known to stop in for a pint.
