'Priceless' Banksy mural in Cromer, Norfolk, defaced with obscene graffiti by vandals

A 'priceless' Banksy mural has been vandalised in a British seaside town - with penises and "Andrew was 'ere" sprayed alongside the artwork. The image of hermit crabs holding a sign reading "luxury rentals only" was created on a sea wall in Cromer, Norfolk, last summer.

But Banksy's artwork was vandalised at the weekend as obscene graffiti was daubed along the sea wall. Blue, black and yellow spray paint was used to draw penises and phrases including 'Andrew was ere' and 'I want a baby'.

Local photographer Steve Hobart said the vandalism was "disappointing" as Banksy's work was valued in the area. The council has since removed the spray paint, which did not damage the mural as it was protected by a special varnish last August.

Steve said: "It's just disappointing to see really. It's an amazing bit of beach and it's a shame someone's done this.

"In the summer a lot of people come up to see the mural. It's a traditional seaside town and Banksy's work is a nice little addition."

The mural was part of Banksy's Great British Spraycation - a series of 10 works that the mysterious artist produced along the East Anglia coast. Last August, a vandal splashed white paint on one of Banksy's murals in Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Another mural in the town later fetched a rumoured £2m after being sold to a private dealer.
