Price of pint could soon hit £10 thanks to global BEER shortage

The price of a pint could double as severe weather events hit barley production, a new report has warned.

The Nature Plants  journal looked at the impact of a drop in barley production on the supply, price and consumption of beer in 34 different places across the world.

I the UK they found beer consumption would drop by between 0.37 billion and 1.33 billion litres a year - while prices could double.

That would mean 39 pints less per person drunk a year - or about one a week - as costs rose to £7.20 on average and more than £10 for a pint in London.

Pub selling Britain's cheapest pint for just £1 - but there's some bad news

But things look worse in other parts of the world, for example in Argentina drought and high temperatures would see a 35% drop, while the US would see a drop of 3.48 billion litres.

Belgium, the Czech Republic and Germany would see drop of between 27% and 38% in consumption.

The research, was carried out by scientists from University of East Anglia as well as from the US, China, and Mexico.

Their conclusions were based on the effects of climate change on the global production of barley, which is used to make beer.

Price of pint of beer could soar to £10 as experts warn of global shortage of barley due to climate change

In even worse news, the beer shortage is amplified if governments decide that foodstuffs should be prioritised over beer.

Research coordinator Professor Dabo Guan said: "If adaptation efforts prioritise necessities, climate change may undermine the availability, stability and access to ‘luxury’ goods to a greater extent than staple foods."

He added: "A sufficient beer supply may help with the stability of entertainment and communication in society ... While the effects on beer may seem modest in comparison to many of the other - some life-threatening - impacts of climate change, there is nonetheless something fundamental in the cross-cultural appreciation of beer."
