Price of parking at Swansea beauty spot could almost double for van drivers

The price of parking a van at a beauty spot car park in Swansea could almost double with a potential steep increase currently under review. Penrice Estate, which runs Oxwich Bay car park, has confirmed it is considering upping the price from £8 to £15. Penrice Castle Estate's website states that parking is charged at a variable daily rate depending on the time of year. The car park has direct access onto the beach.

The price is for daytime parking only and if introduced would match the current £15 which is being charged for large motorhomes and coaches to park there. Oxwich national nature reserve is situated on the south coast of Gower, just 11 miles from Swansea, and is one of Gower's most visited beaches, especially during summer months. It has twice been recognised as the UK's Beach of the Year.

The reserve is made up of a mix of beach, sand dunes, lakes, woodlands, cliffs, and salt and freshwater marshes. There are two circular waymarked walking trails both of which take you through the dunes where ponies graze all year around. The estate also owns part of Oxwich beach and provides visitor facilities including toilets and two shops selling refreshments, beach toys and equipment.

A spokesman for Penrice Estate, which runs the car park, said: "It is £15 for large motorhomes and coaches at the moment. It's £8 for a VW van and that is under review – that's all I can say. We are reviewing the pricing of vans. I cannot add anymore." The spokesman would not confirm when the decision would be made but told WalesOnline that he was the only one in charge of making the decision.
